The following courses have been part of Michael's teaching responsibilities
since 1996. Until 2005, they were offered through the Institute for Research & Development
at the University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany. Since 2005, they have been held
at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Current students may access selected materials
in the respective password-protected download areas.
The courses ("modules") taught at the University of Duisburg-Essen
are part of an innovative two-year Postgraduate Study Program in Pharmaceutical
Medicine designed to introduce students to the complex process
of new product development in the international pharmaceutical industry.
Since its inception in 1996, Michael has been involved by
- Serving, as a member of the Faculty of Medicine of the Witten/Herdecke
University
(since 2005, at the University of Duisburg-Essen), on the Scientific
Steering Committee of the program,
and
- Serving as the Head Lecturer of Module 2
and Module 12 of the
program.
Module
2: Working in a Complex Organization
(with
emphasis on Innovation Management)
Overview:
Topics covered include: organizational theory and design: organizations
as complex systems, adapting to environmental uncertainty, organizational
goals and effectiveness criteria, value-based management, the principal-agent
model, organizational size and life cycle, bureaucracy, organizational
structures, managing innovation and change; organizational behavior:
attitudes, values, personality, foundations of motivation theories,
leadership, power, politics, and communication in organizations;
managing complex projects: groups and teams, principles of project
management, decision-making in the horizontal organization, heavyweight
teams; case studies.
Grading:
Module assessment will be based on
- Grading of students' homework assignment (15%)
- Class participation (25%)
- Presentations / teamwork (30%)
- Midterm examination (10%)
- Final examination (20%)

Health Economics
Overview:
Topics covered include: International health care spending trends,
market environment, health care reform and regulation; cost-containment
and the ethics of rationing mechanisms; spending decisions by patients,
physicians, and third-party payers; costing theory & analysis;
resource valuation; cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and its theoretical
foundations; cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) and cost-utility analysis
(CUA); interpreting cost-effectiveness claims; the decision rules
of CEA; theoretical foundations of CUA, measuring values and utilities,
quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and alternative outcome measures;
a typology of outcomes instruments; the reference case in health
economic analyses; study designs and data sources in health economics;
modeling in health economics and sensitivity analyses; implications
of different perspectives, international guidelines and international
transfer of data; international pricing strategies for pharmaceutical
products.
